Learn the basics of financial markets

Once a stop loss order is defined, it is executed automatically when the market price reaches a predefined level

Rule of thumb

A stop loss order is linked to  a position to which it has been assigned, in the manner that closing  a position in another way (for example manually) cancels the stop loss automatically, if there are any.

The easiest way to the stop loss is to double-click the left-mouse button on the S/L or T/P column of the open position in question. Another method is to click the right-mouse-click on the open position and choose the„Modify or Delete” option from the context menu.

As a result a new window will appear, with  a description of the active position in the title. Now the new stop loss level can be defined, either as a definite price (by typing the new price in the Stop Loss field) or in points in relation to the current price (field points on the right side).

In practice this would look like the following : let as assume that the trader has an open long position in USDCHF, the current market price is Bid 1,0278 Ask 1,0281. The trader can choose:

  • To set the stop loss at  a predefined price – for example a trader considers a level of 1,0260 to be an important technical level .
  • To assume that the position should not incur a higher loss than a certain number of points. For example if the decision is that the loss should not be higher than 40 points, the value 40 could be entered in the „points” field on the right side of the window.

If the new stop loss is defined correctly, a button „Modify...” with the data of the position in question, should become active. By pressing the button, the new stop loss value will be confirmed and become visible in the position data in the Toolbox window at the bottom of the trading platform.

The stop loss for the long position will be activated  at the moment when the Bid price on the market  reaches the defined level. For a short position, the activation will be triggered by the Ask price.

When the„Modify...” button is not active

Please take note that the „Modify...” button will not be active if the new Stop Loss value is not entered correctly. In order to set the stop loss correctly, the following conditions should be met:

  • For a long position – if the stop loss is set as the determined price level, its level should be lower than the current market price .
  • For a short position – if the stop loss is set as the determined price level, its level should be higher than the current market price.

Moreover, the Stop loss value should not be closer to the current market price than a predefined „Limit” level. The limit for all of the market  is defined in the Table of limits. For example, if the table specifies the limit for the USDCHF market as 5 points, and the prices are Bid 1,0278 Ask 1,0281, the trader can:

  • set a stop loss for a long position at a price of 1,0273 or lower.
  • set a stop loss for a short position at a price of 1,0286 or higher.

We do our best in order to keep the limits as low as possible, however the governing factors here are the volatility and liquidity market conditions.
