PPI (Industrial Producer Price Index)

Rule of thumb

PPI data interpretation depends on the approach of the central monetary Authorities

The Producer Price Index (PPI) measures the dynamics of the selling prices agreed between the supplier and the customer in the Czech Republic. The price taken into account is the revenue received by its producer, and excludes sales and excise taxes such as VAT, as they do not represent revenue to the producer.

The PPI is a similar economic indicator in terms of interpretation as the CPI, which means that its interpretation strongly depends on the policy of the central monetary authorities. In some circumstances, rising PPI inflation may lead to an increase of interest rates, and as such provide the fundamental support to the Czech koruna.

In a case where the monetary policy is expected to remain stable, a rise in  inflation simply decreases the real interest rates, and as such is a rather negative factor for the local currency.

Periodicity of publication

The PPI is published by the Czech Statistical Office on a monthly basis.
