Rule of thumb
Any news releases that cause uncertainty to investors on the global market, may give rise to demand for Swiss franc
This currency pair indicates how many Swiss Francs are needed to buy one US Dollar.
The Swiss franc (CHF) has been treated for many years as a safe currency, and as such is one of the most important reserve currencies around the globe. The mechanism is simple – in a situation of uncertainty on the financial markets, investors often transfer their investments to Switzerland. One of the reasons for the importance of the Swiss franc as a “safe heaven” currency is the fact that this currency once backed 40% in gold, until the year 2000.
The US Dollar occupies first place on a global scale in terms of the percentage share of the turnover on the forex market. CHF itself is the 7th currency in terms of share of the total turnover. USDCHF is accountable for 5% of the global trading volume.
