The Dow Jones Industrial Average Index is the second oldest index in the United States after the Dow Jones Transportation Average
Rule of thumb
Its simplicity makes the DJIA more understandable to the public and reliably indicating market trends
The Dow Jones index is the abbreviation for the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), the index that was created by Charles Dow more than 100 years ago. The DJIA in the first period of its existence included only 11 companies, mainly from the railroad sector.
Nowadays the Dow Jones index consists of an average of 30 blue-chip stocks that are mostly leaders in their sectors. One thing to bear in mind is that this index does not limit itself to the industry sector, although the name could suggest otherwise. This index composition is stable as it changes very rarely, mainly due to occasional acquisitions among the companies included.
The Dow Jones being the oldest index in the US, it is used as a broad indicator of the general trends and investor decisions in the capital market, as with other indices.
