The FTSE 100, also called “Footsie”, is one of the most closely followed indices in the world

Rule of thumb

The FTSE 100 is often used as a base for derivatives contracts and Exchange Traded Funds (ETF)

The FTSE 100 is one of the many indexes managed by the FTSE Group, originally created back in 1984 with  a base value of 1000, as a joint venture between the Financial Times and the London Stock Exchange.

Currently the FTSE Group is an independent institution and has no connection whatsoever with the Financial Times.

Although another index of the FTSE Group, the FTSE All-Share Index is more comprehensive, the FTSE 100 is the most followed and extensively used indexes in the UK. This is because it includes 100 of the most highly capitalised blue chip companies, which represent approximately 81% of the market capitalisation in the United Kingdom.
