The index S&P 500 is managed by the S&P index committee from Standard and Poor’s, and it is closely followed by investors around the world, as an indicator of the condition of the large cap US equities. It captures about 75% of US equities of companies in leading sectors.
The main sectors of the S&P 500 are Info & Technology, financials, energy, healthcare and industrials, which account for between 11% and 18% each. Minor sectors include utilities and materials accounting for less than 4% each of the index.
It is important to remember that this index may not include the largest 500 companies in the U.S., but a broad cross-section of large capitalisation (at least US $4.0 billion) and common equities from different sectors listed on the US equities markets.
