Housing Starts excludes hotels and motels, group residential structures such as homes and dormitories, and manufactured mobile home units

The purpose of the Housing starts report (part of the New residential construction publication) is to provide statistics on the construction of new privately owned residential properties in the US.

 

Data included in the press release is : a number of new housing units authorised by building permits; a number of housing units authorised to be built, but not yet started; a number of housing units started; a number of housing units under construction; and lastly, the number of housing units complete.

 

Excluded are hotel and motels, group residential structures such as nursing homes or dormitories. Also excluded are manufactured mobile home units.

 

Housing starts/building permits may indicate a medium/long-term direction of the economy.

 

When individuals have a more stable, or at least improving financial situation, housing starts is one of the indicators that first reacts to this improvement. It is a different indicator than the new home sales, as the former is specifically related  to construction and the latter to  residential sales. As with new home sales, a rise may be a symptom that the general economy is healthy, leading to the appreciation of the US dollar.

 

Periodicity of publication

Housing Starts is published every month by the US Census Bureau.
