Developed by Bill Williams the Alligator is a trend identification tool, that rather curiously compares the market action dynamics to a life cycle of one famous animal

Rule of thumb

The Alligator oscillator works best when combined together with the Gator indicator

The Alligator Indicator is a method that combines moving averages with fractal geometry and nonlinear dynamics. This indicator includes three lines which are inserted into the chart. The three lines correspond to different moving averages, and as default, are presented in blue, red and green colours.

The first line in blue, called the Alligator’s jaw, is a 13-period smoothed moving average (by default), shifted into the future by 8 periods. The second line in red, called the Alligator’s teeth, is an 8-period smoothed moving average (by default), shifted into the future by 5 periods. The last line in green, called the Alligator’s lips, is a 5-period smoothed moving average (by default), shifted into the future by 3 periods.

The way of interpretation of the Alligator function is somewhat picturesque, but offers a clear idea of the actual situation on the market. This is based on three selected stages of the alligator’s day/life: sleep, hunger and satisfaction.

  • Sleep - when the alligator is asleep (or going to sleep) the three moving averages start to overlay (i.e. the difference between them start to diminish, meaning that the trend in prices is supposed to continue its direction.
  • Hunger - after sleeping, the alligator wakes up and is hungry, therefore the lines will tend to diverge (i.e. the difference between those lines start to increase) meaning that  a market will stay for a time period showing no trend. The longer the alligator stays hungry the more  likely it will enter into a new trend.
  • Satisfaction - satisfaction from food will come soon after eating and before the sleeping time, i.e. a period when the three lines are separated for a period of time, but then slowly start to overlay on each other. The satisfaction stage is the process from a continuous trend to losing the trend.
