The Gator Oscillator is an auxiliary instrument giving quick insight into Alligator Oscillator behaviour
Rule of thumb
Interpretation of the Gator oscillator is easier when it is used simultaneously with the
original Alligator Oscillator

The Gator Oscillator is an auxiliary oscillator to the Alligator Oscillator, developed by Bill Williams. As the main idea behind the Alligator Oscillator is the counteraction of the three moving averages, the Gator Oscillator has the function to show the difference between the values of these lines, helping to visualise the trend dynamics better.
The Gator Oscillator is presented as a histogram below the main chart, with red and green bars. The bars above “0” (zero) show the absolute difference between the long-term moving average (blue line - Jaw) and the medium-term moving average (red line - teeth). The bars below the “0” (zero), show the absolute difference between the medium-term moving average (red line - teeth) and the short-term moving average (green line - lips).
Again, as with the Alligator Oscillator, the Gator Oscillator presents the different stages of the “Alligator” with two symmetrical bars (i.e. one above the “0” line, and the other below) for a given period:
- The Gator awakes when one of the bars (either above or below the “0” line) is red, while the opposite one is green.
- The Gator eats when both symmetrical bars are green.
- Satisfaction (also called “fills out”) occurs after eating, when one of the bars turns red. The Gator sleeps when both symmetrical bars are red.
The Gator sleeps when both symmetrical bars are red. A possible interpretation would be to buy (long position) whenever the alligator is woken or eating on the other hand, a sell signal (short position) would be generated when the alligator is full (from eating) or sleeping.
How to use it with MetaTrader 5:
- Select a chart for which you want the Gator Oscillator to be presented.
- Go to: Insert - Indicators - Bill Williams - Gator Oscillator.
- Gator Oscillator will be automatically displayed below the chart by MeaTrader 5
